Sample taken from 1,000 ft up Fell End, which is in the English Lake District. 3% Iso propyl alcohol used to slow them down. Leitz Wetzlar Dialux phase x40 objective. HDMI Autofocus camera for image capture.

Nice use of phase! These are not Paramecium, but the hymenostome Colpidium colpoda (note the single contractile vacuole and the anterior position of the oral opening).

Thank you Bruce, I should have checked with you ( the expert first ). The sample was given to me by a fellow Microbehunter. He also gave me a specimen of moss from higher ground… another of the many fells in the English Lake District called Buttertubs. I’ll see what lurks there.

Some very interesting ciliates are found in moss samples!
