Crystallized soy sauce under DIY Lucigen polarized oblique illumination + EPI pol, at 10x magnification. A total of 2x178 photos were stacked and stitched together in PS.
Nikon Labophot-2, MPlan 10x

… at first glance, it made me think of a corroded piece of wrought iron.

Really interesting and carefully constructed image, potentially created millions of times per day. Yes, thank you for taking the time to post it.
One question I have is that the fully illuminated circle , appears to be somewhat oval, conforming more or less in it's length by width ratio to the principle feature of the crystallization. Sm I seeing correctly?

Not 100%, because of the stacking/stitching/post-processing artifacts, I had to use content-aware fill in Photoshop.
