Pic and Vid sizes?

#1 Post by cpsTN » Sat Jan 30, 2016 1:58 pm

Please remind me of the low and high end of sizes of pix and vids that can be posted within the forums. I can't seem to find that information.

I go by pixel count. High end limit is 1024 on either side. No low end limit. Windows Paint (free software) can resize pixel counts of your photos. If you save as jpeg within 1024 pixel count using Paint, your photo size should be fine. Edit: maximum photo size is 512 KB.

Your video will be uploaded to another hosting site such as YouTube or Vimeo. Then just provide link to this forum. So no limits.

To be clear, a pic can't be larger than 1024x1024? My software can take pix in 7 sizes, from 640x480 (0.30MP, VGA) to 2592x1944 (5.0MP). The 800x600 (0.48MP) setting wil be the limit then.

With all that said, I think it's best to take your photos in the highest resolution, or size, possible, then downsize them for the forum. But thats just my opinion.

I definitely agree, CE. I use the free Picasa 3 program as the quickest/easiest way to resize images, using the export function.

there are several reasons why there is a limit in image size, for those images that are uploaded.
a. it reduces server space
b. smaller images load faster and this makes it easier for readers with a slow connection to read the posts.
c. smaller images also help keep data transfer volume (and thus cost) low for those who use mobile devices to read the forum
d. large images can not be displayed on the screen

If you want to show larger images, then please use an external hosting service and then link the images to the forum. This still makes loading times slower, however. In this case there is also no limitation to the number of pictures that can be shown in one post. For videos, as has already been said, it is necessary to upload to youtube (etc) and then embed the video by linking it.

Sometimes resizing is not necessary, but cropping is recommended. for those pictures that have a small specimen and much background (eg a cell in the middle and the rest is background), it is often better to just cut out the cell and then use this one without resizing, The cropping also reduces the overall image size, but the object of interest keeps the details.

Hope this clarifies some issues.
