better version of previous spider...

#1 Post by billben74 » Thu Apr 07, 2016 11:33 pm

Hello all,

I've been getting into stacking and stitiching combo and have done a big stitch/stack of the "glass spider" which is to say a well cleared spider through crossed polaroids. This is all at x200.
The process is fairly laborious (1300 images where taken...) so I haven't done a normal transmitted. Maybe one day.
Anyway its actually a rough as in I just stacked without retouching (zerine stacker allows you to use original images versions which you airbrush in to parts of the image allowing manual fine tuning of the image which can improve it a lot;not sure if this is unique to zerine or not).

Image

I'll put the final version here when I finish it.

With 1,300 images involved, to say, "fairly laborious" is a huge understatement. I can't image launching on such a task and admire you for tackling it. It's a very impressive image in my opinion.

The process is fairly laborious (1300 images where taken...)
I would suggest attempting a comparison with say 130 + - images (knock a zero off at least) and see. 1300 is serious over kill.
In fact choose a new subject and try 10, 50, 100 , 500 and 1000
I think you will find the first three adequately meet most cases.

I wasn't very efficient in my photo taking and there is more of the image that I haven't used (yet - e.g. more of the pedipalps as I accidentally missed bits). I plan to go back and fill the annoying gaps.

The stacks varied in depth. Some, involving the areas with hairs that come up out of the plane of the spider, had to be quite deep e.g. 50+. Some areas weren't so difficult.
So you could of got away with a lot less for sure.
I could imagine some software (that may exist) that could aid you in the process i.e. showing overlays of your last stack so you could be entirely efficient and cover the area with least photos for the stitch.

But I'm sure I'll get better with practice.

Experience indeed ;) Still, I have learnt a fair amount about making pictures look better etc.

What ever doesn't kill you 'n' all.

Thanks.

I'm still stuck on 1300 images :)

Both are very good.

Many thanks to all.
Merci Beaucoup.

Here is the horrible thing. It didn't stop at 1300....
I tried to get all the pedipalps in. I managed this but the composition didn't work due to my poor mounting the legs are not symmetrical.
So I had to crop. As you can see the image is still a fair bit larger...

I think I got close to 3000...and then all the processing...the hairs are the nightmare...

Yes I know I'm just a bit of loon... but I guess once I get an idea in my head
"wouldn't it be great to do a huge spider using stacking and stitiching"
I tend to stop only when its done.
It a sign of the rather ridiculus effort required for this image that I had to take a break for a week as even my normal obsessional behaviour was suppressed...

Anyway more than anyone really needs to know but thats the almost embarrassing truth of it....

Fantastic image! Very sharp, and beautiful colors and transparency (somehow I missed seeing this one earlier). Your exceptional effort did result in a very beautiful image :) .
