Diatoms

#1 Post by JimT » Fri May 06, 2016 8:03 pm

Two diatoms from a new sample of pond water. Both taken with the 60X obj.

"Needle" diatom measures ~180X10 um's and is a panorama of two images.

"Coke bottle" diatom measuring ~65 um's. This is a new one for me.

Love 'em both! Those long pennate forms are super tough to get good images of, and here you manage it neatly. The other, Gomphonema (truncatum, I'm guessing), is seldom seen pictured in living form, attached to its stalk - again, nicely captured, one of my favorites! 8-)

Nice Jim,

Your slides are so "clean". How do you do it? Do you kidnap it and place it on a fresh slide? :-)

Thanks all.

I try to find a specimen that is in a clean area of the slide and then I do some clean up in post processing.

Here is another image in a not so clean area of the slide :)

I'm digging all these images, but then, I'm pretty partial to diatoms. Last image shows an excellent and interesting grouping of forms - nice work, Jim! 8-)
