These were alive when I took the photo, however they weren't terribly happy. I believe they'd been out of the incubator for awhile and they've overgrown that dish. Additionally the media they were in had gone a bit too acidic and wasn't so clear, it has a pink to orange tint at this point. I wish I had more time to take some better images. This microscope isn't nearly as good as the other ones I use, you can see the edges are soft and out of focus. The ones popping off the plate are working on dividing. Some of them don't have any room to settle back down to but that probably won't stop them.

Very interesting! Cancer of the... what? Can you briefly describe how these differ in appearance from the normal cells?

Re: Phase images of cance cells
Those cells are these, metastatic lung cancer. They don't look so different from other kinds of cells because they're cancer, more because of the cell type they are. I've have bone stromal cells that are a bit longer and thinner, and also prostate cancer cells that have a more round center but thin and branching processes that come off the body. Although, you can see that the ones growing right next to each other adopt a different shape than ones who have some room near them and have space to move around. The ATCC (site in that link) has pictures of lots of different cell lines if anybody wants to look there.

Agree with Seb - beautiful image - I do however find it strangely disturbing.
