2 Vorticella + alga

#1 Post by 75RR » Sun Jul 10, 2016 1:57 pm

Neofluar 25x/0.60, 40µm (alga width), Oblique, 4 image stack in Photoshop
The Vorticella were not moving very much so thought I would try a mini stack and get all of the stalk in focus.

Additionally this alga would seem to be a good candidate for "Damaged alga or Vagincola?" viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3337

Great shot! The spiral makes me think it is a spirogyra.

Now that you mention it - it does look like spirogyra :)

Very beautiful oblique image (I would have guessed DIC  ). I agree with CE: it seems Vorticella's "thread pitch" can vary a lot, from very small (as in JimT's recent image) to very large, as in here.

Many thanks rnabholz, billbillt, McConkey, JimT, rabitt and gekko.

Agree :)
I would have guessed DIC
Too kind. A 25x slider and matching objective are so rare they are not even on my wish list.

Indeed, not seen one as tight as JimT's nor until now one as loose as this one.
Surprising how much variety there is in Spirogyra. Algaebase lists about 400

Very nice shot and very nice use of oblique light.

I am seeing some good examples of oblique light in the forum. I've often thought it has been one of the most underutilized but yet effective lighting methods. At one point Olympus, Lomo, (and I suspect others) made condensers specifically to make use of oblique light.

Many thanks c-krebs,

I offset the brightfield port in my rotating Phase/DIC condenser, it may not be very subtle but it has the virtue of simplicity. :)
