Radazz, CE, and 75RR: Many thanks for your comments. I thought this might provide a little light diversion from the scholarly diatom stuff :) .

Very nice video. The particles that exhibit the Bifurcation are the same black spots visible in bright light.

Rod, JimT, and Kurt: thank you very much for your kind words. JimT, that makes two of us: what is "Bifurcation"? (yes, I know what a bifurcation in a road is, but not in paramecium :( ).

Actually, I find that a very fascinating phenomenon. I noticed it myself. The brain wants the fingers to type something, and the fingers often type something similar but with a totally different meaning. It is as though the fingers make the decision on what to type on their own, just taking a hint from the brain. How many times have we seen people type "two" when they meant to type "too" or vice versa? I think it is much more complex than an accidental typo or a misspelling.

These days it could very well be Autocorrect on a smartphone that makes me look like a bigger idiot than I am. Just this morning I realized an hour after I made a post here, that for reasons only a microchip could understand, it guessed that I meant to sign a post "Rid" instead of my name.

I haven't misspelled my name since kindergarten....

Longer words are likely to be even more comical when Autocorrect "helps".

Rid

Just kidding,

Red

Probably not a bad idea to include a bit of additional info in the thread title, to suggest why it may be of interest. I suspect a lot of folks never even looked since videos of paramecia are a dime a dozen. I didn't take interest myself until I saw the replies begin to stack up (although this really isn't a fair indicator).

I don't go by title - just as in books, I go by author.
