Campanella umbellaria

#1 Post by c-krebs » Wed Aug 24, 2016 5:57 am

These are sessile colonial peritrich ciliates. (Although I will often find them singly or in small groups or two or three). The "bell" is larger than the more commonly seen vorticella (about 200-260 μm long, 100 μm wide), and the oral cilia, which make 4-6 turns around the peristome are fascinating to watch. The metachronal motion of the cilia reminds you of the fans doing the "wave" in a circular sports stadium. But it is usually quite fast, so here I have used electronic flash to "freeze" the motion.

Occasionally it is possible to gets a "heads-on" view which is really interesting.

Stunning! I especially like the vibrant colors of the first photo. Any secret as to how you achieve that

The heads-on view is amazing too.

Wonderful Photos, and a continuing step in my education in the world of Protozoa.

Just beautiful.

Also makes me want to explore electronic flash, not that mine will look anything like these masterpieces....

Thanks for posting.
