Fly teeth

#1 Post by Radazz » Tue Oct 11, 2016 5:00 pm

Here is a series of pix of the sucking mouth part of a house fly.
Looks like they have teeth!
Zeiss Standard
Canon 7D
Objective: Carl Zeiss 4405435 Germany
Ph2 Neofluar 40/0.75 160/0.17
Zeiss Phase Contrast condenser set to the following:
Brightfield

Brightfield stopped down

Oblique (stop in one of the empty chambers)

Ph1 annulus

Ph2 annulus

Ph3 annulus
Imageimage hosting site over 5mb

4 months ago, I'd never heard of Phase Contrast. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I can or cannot accomplish with it.
There are some natural teachers on this forum, and I appreciate all the help.

Hmm, great images. It looks like they have a series of tracheids, complete with rings! Makes sense if liquid is take up/in by this part. Very interesting set of images. :)

Looking at these, I believe my condenser may be out of alignment on the Zeiss
Need to check when I get back home.
The M20 produces more classic looking ph images, but isn't so well suited for photography.

This should help you set up Köhler - centering the condenser is part of the process.
Always set up Köhler first, then rotate the turret to the Phase position.

Well, it would seem the condenser was slightly out of alignment after all.
Number 2 annulus (the one I use the most of course) was also out of alignment.

Really nice and fascinating images.
Any chance of any details on preparation of mouth part?

Nothing special, plucked it from his little head and stuck it in Canada balsam.

Hello Radazz,

very interesting and nice images, I just saw now. (I was some months in Bangladesh and had no chance to visit this forum the whole time)
Only to complete this thread a picture showing the mouth part of "Musca domestica"
