Difflugia leidyi

#1 Post by cuxlander » Sat Oct 22, 2016 5:53 pm

Hello,
the shell of Difflugia leidyi looks like a Viking helmet. It builds its test from whatever in finds, thereby sometimes looking quite pictoresque, to say the least. It is about 100µm high.

It was named by famous American biologist Joseph Leidy (1823 - 1891). Leidy was initially vertebate palaeontologist and described many of the American dinosaur fossils, before he scaled down and pioneered protozoology, publishing "Fresh-water Rhizopods of North America" in 1879. A visit to http://user.xmission.com/~psneeley/Personal/FwrPLA.htm is strongly recommended to anyone interested in microbes.

Cheers,
Hans

Beautiful view of this amoebas test, thank you Hans. Fancifully...the over shape I gaze at reminds me of a bison looking directly at me! Ah..there in the middle is the side view aspect of a buffalo heading up to the left side of this test...a rich brown rust colored bison!

Your context,Hans, of having us recall the mid 1800's microscopy and illustrations of Dr.Leidy..ehance the understanding of this organisms test...this is a rich experience of your shared microscopy....thanks! charlie guevara
