Crystals. Not the sharpest, but colourful and fractal-like. Make that three more..

#1 Post by billben74 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 9:31 pm

Hello all.

These crystals are taken from the van Gieson's stain that Brunel Microscopes sell. This is, therefore meant to be picric acid and acid fuchsin (by wikipedia). I don't actually believe this as Brunel wouldn't sell picric acid (probably).
You might say I should ask them, but sadly that doesn't always lead to an answer.

Anyway apologies for my vagueness of the substance.

Not the sharpest images I ever taken. These crystals all formed "beyond" the coverslip and as I have a new toy, x60 NA 0.8 objective, I was using this and this goes some way to explain the lack of sharpness. ( Yes I know I'm not meant to use this kind of objective for this purpose, but I'm not always the most serious of people... )

They were exciting to view as I could watch the branching cystal formation live. (I may try to film, or at least timelapse at some point...)

Anyway these are both stitches, composed of about 10 stitched images. A few of the stitched images were 2 - 4 stacks, some single shot.

Crossed polars , some post processing.

Very nice! Amazing how crystals can form such structures

Well if you are apologizing for these I can't wait to see some you are proud of :)

I think you will like you 60X - I do. Beats messing with oil and clean up IMO.

Wow!
They are a superb set, some of the best crystal images I've seen. It's your eye for the angle and the presentation that pushes them above the parapet of the usual crystal slides I think. You have produced some beautifully original and stylish slides here my friend - I'm no artist for certain, but these have so much geometric (and not in the sense of simple symmetry..) interest and suggestive shapes and constructs that the mind can't help but be transported into imagination by them.

They have a dynamism and a certain 3D suggestion about them, as have your earlier examples Bill - very nice and very, very well produced and imaged! Crystals are not my area at all - but these are superb from any perspective I think!

Well done and thanks for the lesson in sheer beauty. :D :D :)

Many thanks.
I can see what you mean about a lightening storm. I was thinking science fiction and planetary bombardment.

Danke vielmals.

And here is a lone island of crystal.
Same specs as the other two.

And a interesting example of fractal growth

And a big rough stitch. Here you can see the slide's edge.

Very nice set. Fascinating and ever-varied subject. You have a great mix of textures and shapes here.

Nicely done.

Many thanks rnabholz.
Indeed different crystal growht patterns: it appears that sometimes one gets bifiringent destorted columunar- like crystals (almost like mountains) or tree like branching fractal growth. It may actually be different substances, or perhaps just conditions.

Merci Beaucoup vesselle.

Le dernier est assez fou. Je ne semble pour obtenir la formation de cristaux beaucoup plus intéressant sans une lamelle. Ceci est une bonne démonstration. (Vraiment besoin pour obtenir la lentille MPLAN ...)

(The last one is fairly crazy. I do seem to get much more interesting crystal formation without a cover slip. This is a good demonstration of this. (Really need to get some MPlan lenses...))
