Dutch Creek Diatoms

#1 Post by rnabholz » Sat Nov 26, 2016 11:51 pm

As discussed on the Doing Diatoms thread, I was able to collect a nice sample of Diatoms yesterday. Here are some of the discoveries from Dutch Creek.

I tried to apply some of the lessons from yesterday's discussion in the processing, I hope you see the results, welcome comments on either side.

AO 10, Ortho Illuminator, 100x Plan Achro Iris Oil, 1096B Toric Darkfield Condenser, Canon 70D, Single frames captured under green filtration and converted to grayscale in post.

Superb set.
I particularly find that the somewhat lower (midrange - gamma?) contrast has given a very pleasing and readily discernible 'midtone detail' to your already beautifully sharp edges to the periphery of the diatoms.

They are getting better each post to my eyes Rod; this latest set has a very nice balance and an increase in detail without the usual ramping-up of contrast - you have to my eyes started to introduce a very pleasing subtlety to your images that actually augments detail rather than compromises it.

You've the basis I think of a very skillful technique - please pursue it and share - it's very interesting indeed and of course may prove in measure to be transferable to other image types such as those that I produce. Great post old chap - keep it up! :D :D :)

p.s. The penultimate image in particular, shows I think what I'm waffling about my friend. :)

Thanks guys.

My Photoshop skills are generally limited to bird and general photography, but not the high dynamic range imaging that I find myself encountering with these diatoms. As a result I hadn't really had occasion to work with some of the controls that 75 so effectively employed in the enhancements he demonstrated.

I am grateful for the help and do agree that it opens up some great possibilities for improving my images.

Great to have a community like this.

Thanks again.

Rod

Excellent stuff, especially enjoyed the location photos in the Doing Diatoms thread, very cool!

I hope the gamma discussion keeps up, as I need it too. 8-)

Thanks. It is a pretty park and turned out to be a good collection site.
