Testate amoebae ?

#1 Post by 75RR » Sun Dec 04, 2016 1:35 am

Plan 40x/0.65, 160µm, DIC, 11 and 12 image stacks in Photoshop

Found these after adding some water to dryish moss.
Think they might be Testate amoebae ... they look a bit like Spumochlamys sp. but the size is all wrong.

Hi 75RR,
definitely no Spumochlamys.
Could be a very deformed Arcella, one of the larger species (discoides, megastoma, artocrea). Only a guess.
Regards,
Hans

Thanks cuxlander,

I had discounted Arcella as there was no apparent aperture - however the size and the rim (on the first one) do make it a possibility. The second one does look a little worse for wear, edges seem in parts to be folded over itself.

Can't really say. Though I do know they like them.

Could it be Peridinium? I suspect my find last week might be Peridinium and they look a bit alike.

Thanks hkv,
did a search for Peridinium and agree that yours certainly looks like the images I found (had not seen your post, sorry),
I found mine on some dry moss rather than in water. Don't know if that disqualifies it.
