This was from muddy water I obtained from the yard (again).

Excellent photo, Gekko.

Do you think the small spheres are fat globules ?

Crater Eddie, lorez, Seb28, and seb: Thank you very much for your kind comments.
lorez, I also was puzzled by the spheres; I hope someone will answer your question. I don't think that I've encountered them before.

I have seen them in similar diatoms, don't know what they are.

I did a bit of research and I believe we are correct that the spheres are fat (lipid) globules.

Many thanks, JimT. May I suggest you try the UFG filter for a very similar look (even as your oblique images already give a "real" 3D effect)?

Thank you very much, Walter! I believe the colors come from the lambda plate incorporated into the DIC prism.

Very nice and very sharp!
I seem to recall that you expanded the "Hole" in your garden, is there an increase in activity?
Also did you record the size of the diatom. To the nearest 5µm will do. :)

Unfortunately all I seem to find are diatoms, very few rotifers, and an amoeba or two. I'm hoping that with time things will start to grow there.

Length = 152.0270 µm, width = 27.0124 µm :) [By the way, I used what you called my "signature" in the lower left corner of the image to determine those dimensions :) ]

Seem to have a blind spot as far as your signature goes. My fault for concentrating on the diatom.
