Tylenol

#1 Post by Radazz » Mon Jan 30, 2017 8:15 pm

Interesting results using Extra Strength Tylenol dissolved in alcohol and allowed to crystallize on a cover slip.
Slip mounted face down on slide and photographed through the cover slip.

Zeiss Axioskop splan 10x infinity
Cross polarized illumination.

More abstract art, I guess.
Enjoy,
Jim

Radazz, I love doing crystals. Haven't done any in a while and your images are an incentive. Very nice.

Hard to beat crystals for beauty and interesting formations.

Good stuff.

Thanks for all the nice comments.
The next project will be a video of them forming.
I will post the results.

Also partial to crystals. Working on some.
Yours are very nice.
Really vivid colours with full rainbow sequences and nice feather like structures.

Dissolve Tylenol in 95% alcohol then put onto slide. Crystals form within 2 minutes.

Is there a 'best' polarfilm ? Brand, thickness, or any special quality? It
will be paired with a camera lens polarizer.

I've tried both 91% and 96% denatured fuel alcohol, but I've had the most success using the 70% because it takes a little longer to evaporate, and, again in my experience, results in more extensive and varied Chrystal growth.

I picked up a polarizer/analyzer set on eBay for around $40 usd. The polarizer fit fine, with minor modification on a Nikon YS2T with an analyzer on a stick that slots into an assembly just under the head.

I hung the analyzer from the aforementioned kit in the spacer on the Axioskop where a top filter slider would go if I had a top illuminator. The polarizer mentioned above had a large flange on it that was too large to use on the Axioskop field iris, so I bought a $20 49mm polarizer for a movie camera that is the same size as the field iris. I rotate this filter while it sits on the illuminator, to cross it with the analyzer, and it works fine for photography. Don't have any retarders or such, but I'm not analyzing molicules, just making pretty pictures.

Hadn't thought about using polar film, I guess it depends where you want to mount the analyzer.
Mounted in a collar to fit over the occular of a monocular scope, or, on top of the nosepiece if you have access for a binocular scope. In either case, something stiffer might be better.

My setup would be like yours, except the Nikon has a nice slit between the head
and body that will accept a fairly thick sheet of polarfilm. There is such a wide
variety of these films I'm hoping to avoid a costly mistake!
