Fly - Eye and wing

#1 Post by hkv » Thu Feb 02, 2017 12:25 am

I have no idea what species of fly this is. Found it on the floor. These are shot with MPlan Fluorites 10X. Full body 1.25X (APO)
Illumination through ping pong ball and Zeiss fiber optic illuminator. I have no idea why the wing ended up in such nice colors. There are no polarisers involved.

Very nice!

It is common to see that interference color/structural color in insect wings or exoskeletons:

Hi HKV,
Looks to me like a fruit fly, many species world wide.

Thank you all! I never realised (until now) how deep stacks are needed for these type of subjects. The fly's eye is 200 deep. Normally for my biological objectives, 5-20 is enough, but these requires much more work.

Yes, might be a fruit fly, but It is much bigger than a "normal" fruit fly. This fly is approx. 8 mm long (almost 1/3 of an inch).
