Golden gnat

#1 Post by kit1980 » Sun Feb 12, 2017 11:30 am

This is the same gold-coated fungus gnat I used for my SEM images at viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4540 (and see non-coated 10x at viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4512).

2x objective, LED though ping-pong ball half, single image, vignetting added in post-processing:

10x objective, ping-pong ball half illuminated by the microscope's illuminator from below, about 40 images stack:

Thanks 75RR for suggesting making light photos of the gold-coated SEM sample! I somehow didn't think about this myself...

Yes, fascinating is a good word for it -- this is really really really cool to see, thanks for posting! Any and all "behind the scenes" pictures would be most eagerly lapped up around here, I'm sure, such as ones showing the stub the specimens are mounted on, the sputter coating machine, etc. Hope I don't come across like an ingrate trying to pile chores on you, just saying.
Cheers,

Second image looks as good as a SEM. Great technique. I have to cut a ping pong ball in lalf.

Very nice.
Like the gold.
Like the second.
Sorry, but I'm a little confused on the illuminator/ping pong ball. This is episcopic illumination?

Thanks!

The ping-pong ball half (with a hole for the objective) is on top of the specimen.
The specimen illuminated like for transmitted illumination (but without condenser / field diaphragm).
The specimen is on a non-transparent base, so direct light hits only the ball half, not the specimen itself.
The ball half glows, and the specimen illuminated by this bounced light.

The second image was shortlisted in The Royal Photographic Society's International Images for Science 2017 competition, and now will be part of the exhibition touring UK:

As a beginner re photo-stacking I have adopted some of what you have used here to experiment with static images. The image I have posted is actually a whirl created from drilling through brass. I used a ping pong ball around the specimen that was on a slide with a partially translucent small piece of tap underneath it ... the illumination is just the base light with the condenser removed. I also placed a piece of aluminium foil around the objective to utilise as much light as possible. The objective is a Vickers X5 NA 0.15 on a Nikon S series microscope. I am just trying to get a handle on the best approach to get the stacking happening.
