Micromollusk - Marine shell

#1 Post by hkv » Sat Mar 04, 2017 11:24 pm

I am tired of waiting for the ice to melt on the ponds and lakes where I live so I decided to ask the local aquarium store for a water sample. Found a lot of stuff in there and here is the first find, a micromollusk. Around 2.5 mm in diameter.

Decided to try the difference between the UplanFl4X and the Mplan5X. The first being of biological type and the other being a metallurgical objective. The 4X does not require a cover glass either, so in theory they should similar expect for the slightly higher magnification of the Mplan.

Here is the Uplanfl4x. Zeiss and Ikea illumination. Stack size is 66.

MPlanFl5X. Stack of 51.

I decided to zoom in with the MplanFL10x to get a better look. Stack of 47.

Once zoomed in I noticed a lot of green algae growing inside. Very difficult to see with plain light and external illumination so I decided to try ultra violet (UW) illumination.

Objective UplanFL4X. Stack of 33.

Excellent images - particularly like the stepped magnification in UV

Good idea on the aquarium water sample, was it from the filter tank?

Thanks 75RR, not from the filter tank, but from a shrimp tank. Mostly surface water but the water current was strong in the tank so I guess the snail was going with the flow.

Looks like that MPLAN is a keeper. That first UV image looks like an X-RAY image. Very cool set.

I believe it was a salt water tank.

Yes, the MPLAN (5X, 10X) and the LM Plan (20,50,100X) with long working distance are really useful. I am missing the LM Plan 100X, but looking at ebay for something to show up at a decent price. The 100X has a W.D of 3.4 mm which is good for an 100X objective.
