Silicoflagellates (Dictyochales)

#1 Post by hkv » Tue Apr 25, 2017 8:03 pm

I decided to try to improve my previous photos of Silicoflagellates. My previous image was captured using an Olympus UplanApo 40X, but resolution ended up rather poor.

First three images are captured using UplanSAPO 60X water immersion. I also tried to water the condenser, but the results actually got worse. I need to explore this more. The last image is captured using an Olympus UplanSAPO 100X Oil with oiled condenser.
In the first 2 images I played with various DIC settings to get different color effects.

These are very good. I missed your first post but these are definitely keepers. I especially like the 100X oil image. Such detail.

Thanks Billbillt, Rudi and Vaselle.

Here is another stack with slightly different appearance. Also 100X with oil, oil.

Well captured. Very tough subject in my limited experience with them.

The metallic appearance of some of them is really appealing.

Nicely done.

Beautiful!

For 100x oil photos, could it be that you close the condenser a little bit too much?

Well, that is possible. Also I think that I was little aggressive in the post processing. I tried to get as many features as possible visible without creating an artificial look. Perhaps I should have been a little more careful with the contrast setting.
