Snail in fluorescence - Revisited

#1 Post by hkv » Fri Apr 28, 2017 6:52 am

I went back and looked at old stacks and found a left-over stack that I thought I'd share with you. This is a tiny shell where the water starts to dry out and the snail is trapped in a water pocket. I think the added curves make it more interesting to look at compared to the plain version previously posted.

Another stunning and interesting image hkv!

Would the red bits be algae or other plant material? Fluorescence can really produce some interesting and unexpected results!

Thanks for sharing,
Rudi

Yes, the red and the orange bits are algae/diatoms with chlorophyll. Chlorophyll fluoresce in red when excited with light of a wavelength around 400-440 nm.

Thanks for the information. I am hoping my fluorescence setup will be here soon, it is in customs at the moment.

Indeed it does. I think it frames the snail very nicely.

I submitted this image to National Geographic's photo contest "Patterns in Nature". Scroll down to see the outcome.

Wow, this is really nice work. What did you use to make it fluoresce, something like halogen lighting on a fluoro train/condenser?

Thanks for looking!

It was shot using an EPI Illuminator and a Exfo Exacte light source (Mercury lamp). The EPI illuminator was equipped with a filter cube suitable for chlorophyll (around 400 nm).
