Nice! Is that a resting egg or normal egg? I thought they carried more than one egg?

hkv,
During my search to ID the Cladocera the photos and drawings had several eggs which appear to be quite small compared to the large 118 x 85 um of this one.
Plus the flea itself is only 270 x 200 um.
As to being resting or normal egg I will need to dig further into this since my knowledge is very limited on this. Still learning and having fun. If you can supply more info on this would be great.
Thank you to everyone who responded to my post.

Nice cladoceran, Rich B...and right around "Mothers Day" for us US microscopists. I too encounter these small crusteaceans in my artificial pond,,'my cladoceran neighbors' of this type often have a greenish hue to their solitary or twin 'huge eggs relative their body size'.

Based upon my Thorp text, my understanding is that these are the eggs which will hatch rather promptly..and develope within the female,,,so these are termed: subitaneous eggs'...as opposed to the diapause/resting eggs these crusteaceans make.

In addition to the compound eye with it's muscles for movement (evident with higher mag. objectives)..my cladocerans similar to yours here..actually often have two simple eyes on each side of the head (total of four simple eyes that is).

Thanks for these image captures..I love these folk for all their unique traits, their adaptions, their function in our freshwater food webs...and their resemblance to a Heironymus Bosch painting: "Graden of earthly Delights"??!!

Like the” Mothers Day comment”, it would have been nice to witness the birth, perhaps another time.
Thank you for the detailed information about these crustaceans I really appreciate it and I’m sure others on the forum do also.
I will have to check out the eye the next time I encounter a cladoceran or its family members.
