No special technique. Just waiting until one (on rare occasion) sits still for awhile and then quickly try to shoot a stack. In 90% of the times it fails, but sometimes... High ISO and short shutter speed are key here to be able to finish a stack in a few seconds.

Do you make use of flash at all, and if so, what are your thoughts regarding practicality and quality?

No, I never use a flash. I have actually never tried it. I use a camera with great ISO performance and have not yet seen a need for a flash.

Thanks HKV. Do you have a super powerful light source as well? Mine is 10 watts LED which allows for relatively slow shutter speeds using X40 upwards even with ISO set to 1600 or above.

i have a 100w halogen light. In worst case I could use a 200w mercury lamp with visible light filter and al liquid light guide. So far that has not been needed. My camera i fairly noiseless up to 6400 ISO and have a mximum shutter speed of 1/32000. In practice I rarely go above 1/2500. The Vorticella I shot recently was at ISO 4000 and 1/1250s shutter speed.

Thanks again HKV.

That is some light power you have going there, and a very potential high top shutter speed on your camera (what is the model?)

I see. So you are able to rapidly fire 20 shots a second in order to make a stack.

I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Very nice!
So for this fast stacks, is focus moving manual or automated?

Manual. For fast moving subjects I try to keep focus as best I can and let the camera capture as fast as possible. For slow movers or stationary subjects I can slowly roll the focus in a more controlled way and lower the frame rate to 5-10fps.
