Hello all.
Apologies for long time no post. Life, complications etc.
Anyhow....
I managed to get a Saharan silver ant from PhD student (who studies them) in Brussels.
Cool hey? He really liked the image and is threatening to use it in his poster presentations.
Anyway the slight downside is was minus its antanae. So it looks a little weird.
Still one has to make the best of such an unusual sample.
These little babies are the most heat tolerent ant and can just about hang on with body temp of 53 deg C!
They look silver macroscopically (when dry) as their hairs act like optical fibres (I believe this is like the polar bear but please correct me if I'm wrong).
Microscopically they look lile very long legged (all the better to get away from the burning sand) orange ants with white fuzzy hair.
Done using my x4 na 0.13 Flourite lens and my various LED torch/goosenecks/LED panels and small cylinder of polymer packing foam as diffuser around the lens/subject.

Come on! JIminy Cricket is 78 this year. That's just the picture from his driver's license, correct?
Very cool, nonetheless.
