Amphora Diatom
Amphora Diatom
Hello,
I am showing a pretty Amphora cf. copulata:
Size 60 µm, 60x Achromat, transmitted light, stack of 3.
I was wrong here, the sideview is of a cymbella, not an amphora:
Thank you actinophrys for drawing my attention
Greetings,
Hans

Re: Amphora Diatom
Superb images - congratulations my friend!
Great to see the living-thing (or at least one including 'contents'). Adds a lot of information and interest I think.
Thanks for these lovely pictures - I don't suppose you have any more, perhaps different view-point or species.....
Excellent!

This is great!.. How did you manage to get a side view?... Wonderful photos!..

Re: Amphora and Campylodiscus Diatoms
Hello,
and thanks for your kind comments.
@BillT: They were all on one slide. Books told me its the same species. But seebelow postings!
@JohnB: Generally my equipment is not overgood with Diatoms (I'm specialising in testate amoebae). The fine structure of most silicon cells require better equipment such as DIC, which I do not have. And yes, they were alive, Diatom-chloroplasts are yellowish brown.
Like this Campylodiscus hibernicus (not overgood photos):
and the saddlelike sideview:
Cheers,
Hans

Re: Amphora Diatom
The first diatom is a very nice Amphora, but they don't really have that sort of side to sit on. It's true the isolated valves are crescent-shaped, but in an intact cell they are tilted apart to face the same way; compare for instance an SEM. Your second photo shows no sign of that shape, but sits like a diatom where the valves are more parallel, and I think is a Cymbella.
Re: Amphora Diatom
Hello Actinophrys,
You are of course right, my second specimen (the sideview) is definitely a Cymbella sp. Here is a drawing by Hustedt (1930), showing the typical shape of the cymbella-chloroplasts:
I am not too experienced as far as diatoms are concerned and jumped to the wrong conclusion as both shapes were the only quite numerous ones on my slide. I'll correct my first posting.
Thanks for the correction,
Hans
