What was the ciliate that ate a stentor?

#1 Post by Microbia » Sat Sep 16, 2017 10:35 pm

it looks like Homalozoon and it eats like Homalozoon, but it is oval shaped and it doesn't have a granular mass near the mouth..

Outstanding! You have captured some HUGE meals in your videos and this is one of the best. I don't think I've ever seen the ciliate that did the eating. Was your sample from a local pond?

Microbia, yes very good video. I can not find a definitive reference to the size of Spathidium but must be large.

Thank you! This sample is from the pond of the newly opened park in the center of Moscow just near the Red Square.

Thank you. Yes, this ciliate is quite large. I used 20x objective here. And there were much larger ciliates of this spicie in the sample.

Wow, your sample jar, the pond, and Moscow all in the same photo! Now that's the way to answer my question. Just goes to show that one can be right in the middle of an urban area and still find lots of pond water creatures.

You are certainly getting a lot of cool action from that pond, and your imaging is quite good. Thanks for the photo of the source pond, it is always interesting to see where things come from. And the fact that it is in the middle of Moscow makes it even more interesting. I am enjoying your videos, keep up the good work!
