Arcella dentata

#1 Post by cuxlander » Thu Sep 21, 2017 9:28 am

Hello,

this is an Arcella dentata from an unusual angle - oblique dorsal, showing the crown shape:

One must be lucky to get a side view of one of the discoid Arcella species'.

Stack of 40, 40x achro.

Greetings,
Hans

Very nice! Was it under a cover glass? I have never managed to see them from that angle.

Hello,
and thanks for your kind comments.
@Kurt and HKV: You know that most testacea-tests are quite fragile, and I hate to crush them!
I therefore use concave slides, with cover glass. This often gives me the chance to rotate and turn my objects.
In this case the (empty) shell was leaning on a bit of debris, hence the fortunate oblique position.
Cheers,
Hans

Great picture. First time I have ever seen Arcella dentata.
Can I ask how you found this organism and how common they are to find?

Cheers :)

Hello Ronald,
I only found them in one place, where 3 years ago they suddenly appeared in great numbers. There still are half a dozen in each petri-dish from recent water samples.
This is a muddy ditch in a fen with birch and alder. Water and ground are slightly acidic (PH ~6), no real bog. Some sphagnum (Sphagnum squarrosum) grows at the water edge which I squeeze into my container. Always keep some sphagnum in the water, this keeps your water sample alive for months.
You will find numerous testate amoeba species in this kind of environment.
Btw, the most interesting species' you find in very acidic/low mineral raised bogs, which form a very special habitat with specialised inhabitants. You are also bound to find beautiful Micrasterias there.
Greetings,
Hans

PS this probably answers some of your questions in your recent "hi Guys" posting.

Thanks for the extremely detailed reply I appreciate it. It does answer my previous post as well which is great. I will have to scout local areas for that type of ecosystem but I guess that’s part of the fun.
On a side note it would be good if we could get detailed explanations of sample collection for various species and compile them somewhere, prehaps another thread or sub forum, obviously I don’t know how much work it would take to create or who to suggest the idea too but it would be useful.
