Some more samples from the haematococcus culture

#1 Post by Crater Eddie » Mon Feb 09, 2015 4:04 am

Image

This culture bottle is growing a nice variety of creatures. I would never have known the blob on the right was a rotifer if I hadn't seen the mastax working.

Image

I believe the fellow just to the left of center here is an amoeba of some sort. It moved very slowly across the field. Later I found several more somewhat similar ones.

Image

The intensity of the red in some of these is quite stunning.

And this was simply beautiful. I took 6 or 8 shots of this, this one was the best.

Beautiful shots. Your culture bottle is doing well. I wish my bird bath was as prolific.

Thank you both for your kind comments!

I'll tell you the secret of a "prolific" birdbath Lorez: Just ignore it. Don't clean it, or at least not very often. Take your samples from the sludge that collects in the bottom, and you will have plenty of interesting things to look at. I'll almost guarantee it.

Very nice, CE! Beautiful, vivid colors. I'm glad your jars are producing such great critters and resulting images. Well worth the effort.

Didn't even know what haematococcus was, had to look it up. Great images and such vivid reds.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! That next to the last photo was taken of a sample that had set in the pipette for an hour or so while I worked on the first slide. Before shooting it down the drain at the end of my work session I thought I would see what was left, and these guys just about stunned me. I don't know if they were that brilliant to begin with, or if an hour or so sitting on my desk away from the light somehow caused them to juice up. That might be an interesting experiment to try some rainy afternoon.

I'm way ahead of you on the bird bath, Eddie. Last year the Audubon Society gave me a red card and told me never to water the birds again.

Those colors are just outstanding! And the mix of subjects is really interesting.

I am looking forward to some warmer weather so that I can collect some living subjects for study.

Nice work

Nice images. Those reds are amazing.
Interesting Ciliate in the middle of the second photo. Can anyone id it?
The last photo with what I believe is a Volvox is great. Like them

I don't know what it is - but I don't think the last image is of a Volvox - it's too tidy :) But I could be wrong

Now that you mention it, it is remarkably symmetrical.
Still like it!

All of my other culture bottles are pretty boring compared to this one. I am considering inoculating most of the rest of them with a few CC's from this bottle to see what happens.
