What form of illumination were you using?
Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
Hi Einman, there is no fancy lighting with me its just a desk lamp positioned at an angle to give maximum light.
Thank you

Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
Your photos are quite nice but I can see where proper lighting could make them even better.
I generally do not use fancy lighting either. IKEA lamps $10 are my most used piece of equipment. Although I do own the "fancy" stuff.
The lighting when using a stereoscope makes a huge difference, not necessarily the "cost" of the lighting, rather the positioning and color. I generally prefer the "daylight" types of lighting. The IKEA are LED and work great. You should try one. It will make a huge difference in your photos.

Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
Ok i will get together my lighting stuff and experiment to get the best results, i think the greenish colour is from the camera makeup as i normally forget to reset the colouration within the settings of the camera and not the lighting. Time will tell!

Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
really cool. what kind of camera setup did you use? I am currently trying to justify the purchase of an older stereo model - any arguments pro or con will be welcomed.

These are very good.. Thanks for sharing..
Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
It's a lead pipe cinch: if you enjoy microscopy the least little bit, you owe yourself a stereo scope. Very serviceable older ones like AO/Spencer model 26 or Swift 90 can be had for ~$50.Nance wrote:I am currently trying to justify the purchase of an older stereo model - any arguments pro or con will be welcomed.
What will you use it for? Why, everything; that's why they're nice to have. There are no cons. Get two or eight Jansjo lights to go with it, they're also useful for everything.

Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
thanks, yes - a friend just gifted me with four of those lamps (an older model - 3w) - they are pretty cool. I have been thinking about how they could be manipulated for different types of light output or controls. but LED light wears terribly on my eyes, and I am not liking what I am learning about its effects on the human's being. so I also picked up a AO735 pretty cheaply - that should be useful. maybe someday swing over to a halogen light ring.
between the great deal on the ao735 and my friend finding the 3w led goosenecks - I was thinking maybe God wants me to get that stereoscope that has no lighting.

lead-pipe cinch: something very easy or certain
lol... I was thinking the response was from ex-marine about his camera. trying figure out how 'lead pipe cinch' had anything to do with a mode of photography. I have never heard that saying before. googled it.

Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
Although I use an LED light I also prefer, in some circumstances, a typical halogen lamp. My go to stereoscope has multiple forms of lighting available. Darkfield, Brighfield, transmitted and reflected via a combination of 4 light sources, 1 LED and 3 Halogen. In regards to the effect on your eyes, I believe that is more in regards to some of the older LED lighting used for compound scope illumination rather than reflected lighting such as used with a stereoscope.
The older LED lights had wavelengths that could cause eye problems.

Re: Shield Bug, and Rat tailed Maggot
Nance- What type of stereoscope are you considering? I can make recommendations. I have owned many models and currently own AO, B&L, Nikon, Olympus and Zeiss stereoscopes. I lean towards entomology where compound scopes are less desirable.
As you can see by exmarines photos you can get some pretty nice images even from older scopes! His pics looks as good if not better than I have seen taken with some newer models.
