Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
Here are some images from old photo sessions this summer/fall. The last one (Arcella) was a real pain and is hand-stacked. It was impossible to get Zerene or Helicon to do a decent job, so I hand stacked it from 14 images and manually selected the focus areas using the Zerene retouching module. Took several hours, but I think it was worth the effort. At least that is what I try to convince myself...
Copepod eggs. 20X, Pol:

Copepod eggs. 40X, Pol. Once again, this was a difficult shot as the 40X has so little depth of field and working distance. Smashed into the eggs with the objective all the time... The 40X is really not designed for this kind of subject:

Green Algae. Kind of liked the smooth bend and decided to take a shot. 40X, DIC:

Amoeba - Arcella. 60X Water Immersion, DIC. Interesting to see him sticking out in a few places. Hand stacked from 14 images:

Re: Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
Beautiful! the Arcella reminds me of a pile of green grapes on a lace-fabricated serviette...but what would the white items be?
Re: Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
Thanks! Ha Ha, Yes. But I am sure the grapes are tastier...Hobbyst46 wrote:Beautiful! the Arcella reminds me of a pile of green grapes on a lace-fabricated serviette...

I would say the Arcella was worth the time and effort. Very nice.

Re: Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
As ever of the highest standard. I'm trying to pick a favourite but failing.
A real treat for the eyes.

Hello Hakan,
they are all great. I like the Arcella best.
I believe its a young Arcella gibbosa, when they grow older they partly loose their hyalanity.
The blob bottom left of the sarcode is a contractile vacuole. By osmotic pressure the organism constantly absorbs water. The vacuole pumps excessive water out of the plasma and from time to time explodes and releases it. Yes, great picture under difficult conditions.
Greetings,
Hans
Edit: corrected position of vacuole

Thanks for the ID. Perhaps a stupid questions from a beginner, but what is "hyalanity"? Thank you for explaining the role of the vacuole! I have learned something new!

What is 'hyalanity'? Professor Google is no help on that one...when they grow older they partly loose their hyalanity.

Re: Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
Sorry Kurt for wrong spelling.
Even the word hyalinity, I fear, does not exist and is my own word creation.
When Arcella cells are young, their shells are are colorless and hyaline, i.e. translucent, older ones become brown and intransparent.
Sorry for confusion.
