3 videos, 4 ciliates

#1 Post by 75RR » Mon Mar 05, 2018 12:44 pm

Finally put my microscope back together as I had taken it apart for the move and jumped in.
Ended up with three videos from the one slide.
Sea water for a change so there will be a few known unknowns and even more unknown unknowns ...
Feel more than a little rusty at the moment so bear with me.

All done on the Plan 40/0.60 with DIC
Algae are 25µm across. Everything else is proportional to that.

Nice! :)

The critter in the second video is Chlamydodon. The top of the cytopharyngeal "fish trap" basket is visible throughout, and we have occasional brief glimpses of the "railroad track" structure around the margin of the cell.

In the last video, the mobile organism is Diophrys, and the stalked one is a vorticellid (either Vorticella or Pseudovorticella...genus can't be determined without close inspection of the pellicle).

No idea what the exploding guy is, but it's a pretty classic case of cellular "blebbing." :D
