A few stills from the seawater slide

#1 Post by 75RR » Mon Mar 05, 2018 4:22 pm

Plan 40x/65, Alga is 25µm wide, DIC, Salt Water, stacked in Photoshop

A few stills from the seawater slide that I posted some videos from earlier.
The last image has the most faithful alga colour reproduction.

Nice photos.
Are these diatoms next to the alga? I looked for such in apparently the other (east) side of the "seawater pond" but there were just algea - not diatoms...
Is the DIC on the Zeiss WL microscope? I seldom see DIC parts for the standards on eBay.

Thanks Hobbyst46

Yes Diatoms. It is a bit of a lucky dip - one never knows what will turn up.

I have the last of the DIC 160 tube attachments for the Zeiss Standards on my WL, though I only have the 40x and the 63x sliders for it.

Thanks Crater Eddie. Nice to have the microscope back together again. Still needs a little tweaking, as I do. :)

Thanks.
Provides inspiration to attempt a similar saltwater fishing/mining mission...

Hi RR75,
thank you for showing, really nice images!
Can you tell in what environment you took the sample and how you took it?

With sea water I had very different results in the past: In some cases I found nice plankton, but last year in October in Croatia there simply was nothing at all in the water.

Thanks MicroBob

I got the sample from a marina.
If you look around there are usually several ropes that are left dangling in the water. These tend to attract algae.
I pulled up one of the ropes and grabbed an alga sample.
Easier than trying to grab some from the bottom of a boat, though I no doubt will be trying that at some point. ;)

Rocks on the shoreline are another good source of algae.

Great pictures!

The diatom in the first picture is Licmophora.
Pictures 2-5 are all Achnanthes.

Good to see you back posting pictures!

Yes, great to see you back in business, and I couldn't help but think your new environment should offer some excellent diatom hunting. I hope all pans out well!

I have endless trouble getting good wet mount images out of my 40x/.66 lens, part of the trouble seems to be extremely limited working distance. Your images inspire me to keep at it ... although it'll be a couple months before I see my WL again, as I wander far afield.

Charles: what ID key are you using for marine forms?
Cheers,

Many thanks Pat Thielen, JimT, Charles, Lilly Begonia and KurtM. Very kind. Good to be back.

Great to get an ID on these diatoms Charles. Thanks :)

Fantastic images, makes a man want to invest in DIC! Next time I am in Florida I must try some salt water samples.
