Ciliate

#1 Post by JimT » Mon Mar 05, 2018 7:17 pm

My wife over watered the poinsettia plant and lots of little critters developed in the small pool of standing water.

Here is a new ciliate for me ~200 Ums. I am not able to ID it so suggestions welcome.

Nice one. :) It is a condylostomatid (Condylostoma, Condylostomides, etc.). It very much resembles a ciliate W. Foissner found in a Costa Rican soil sample in the mid 90s, Condylostomides terricola. The body shape and arrangement of the macronucleus are similar. The fact that it was found in watered soil is important, since that would be a bit unusual for the better-known genus, Condylostoma.

New to me, as well. :) At first, I took it for a Condylostoma, but it seemed odd that you'd found it in a soil sample.
