This one shows a bit more branching.

Plan 40x/0.65, 22µm widest point, DIC, 3 stacks of 11, 12 and 16 stitched in Photoshop

Oh my.... They just get better - amazing detail, superb!
I get a definite feel for the structure of the organism - very nice indeed.

A little piece of trivia, since natural history is one of my interests, a quote from the Wikipedia article on red algae:
Fossil record
One of the oldest fossils identified as a red alga is also the oldest fossil eukaryote that belongs to a specific modern taxon. Bangiomorpha pubescens, a multicellular fossil from arctic Canada, strongly resembles the modern red alga Bangia despite occurring in rocks dating to 1.2 billion years ago.

Really an impressive photo, I like it very much. Must have been quite some work...stitching and stacking? What software do you use for stacking?

Thanks hkv, appreciate that.

Thanks Desertrat, interesting info!

Thanks ImperatorRex, I think it helps that it is an interesting subject.

I use Photoshop CS6 at the moment. To be honest not the best tool for this as it is very automated.
I use it because I already had Photoshop and every time I scrape together a €100 I seem to have a better (microscopical) use for it than to invest in a dedicated stacking software.
There are some free ones out there but not I believe for the mac.

Hello 75RR,

Very nice image - hard to beat a good DIC shot and then the stacking/stitching on top! I have a good DIC system (Leitz Nomarski) but have not used it for some time. Might have to set it up on one of the spare microscopes and get re-familiarized with it.

Of course your location tends to provide different specimens from what I am familiar with here in NE Ohio!
All the best,
Mike

Thanks MikeA
Most definitely dig out the DIC system and dust it off (hope it does not really need that); if you then add a little stacking & stitching ...
Be a shame not to get the best out of those wonderful machines.
