A few shots from the "Dad's pond" culture jar

#1 Post by Crater Eddie » Mon Feb 23, 2015 3:46 am

This jar is a sample (#2) taken from my dad's pond about a month ago, between freezes. This one does not get aerated, and it sits on the plant rack under the lights with the carnivorous plants, not next to the brighter CFL with the other culture bottles. It has an interesting population. 10x objective

I have no idea what these are. Any ideas? 10x objective

Same object(s) 4x objective

These Paramecia look like they are having a convention. They move so fast I couldn't get a good shot at higher mag. I didn't know they got this big, these guys are huge. 4X objective

This is my favorite shot from the whole slide. Another desmid? 40x objective

Very nice menagerie! I see some interesting algae in there as well

Looks like potential fun for hours.

Yes, there are some very interesting algae in there, I am especially keen to get a better look at some of those short sections of filamentous algae. Many of those present a very interesting cell structure... these will definitely be the subject of a future study session. Provided that I can ignore all the other interesting creatures long enough.
This jar had been sitting on the shelf untouched since I collected it, and was getting rather low on water via evaporation. I had just added about a pint of RO water to the jar stirring everything up. I saw that there was a lot of "stuff" suspended, so decided it might be worth a look.
This jar is proof that a culture doesn't have to be fancy, this one certainly isn't. It's just a jar of water sitting near some lights. But there sure are a lot of interesting things growing in it.

What a rich collection of things to look at (and show us!) Absolutely great! In a few random shots you show two Micrasterias! I've never seen one under my microscope :( Thank you!

Thanks for the kind comments Gekko. This jar seems to have a pretty good population of interesting Desmids. I have only just recently started reading about them.
