These (much more colorful) images can be compared with the ones of the Sonchus Olecar. in The White Parachute post of a few days ago. In this pappus the hairs appear to be decorated with spikes, but the spikes are very small and I think they are actually the tips of the fibers from which the hairs are spun -- waiting for the opinion of mrsonchus!
