Trachelophyllum

#1 Post by Microbia » Tue May 01, 2018 12:43 pm

This was the 1st time I saw this ciliate called Trachelophyllum. There were plenty of them in the sample. It's very interesting that they prefer to bite bigger ciliates and eat parts of them. I observed them biting like a dozen ciliates Stylonichia. Though, they eat a whole prey if it's small enough.

Great video - really interesting to see how it hunts.
It seems frighteningly efficient.

Excellent video Microbia, it's a very efficient hunter alright, must have a prodigious growth rate.

Microbia, you have an amazing talent for recording litostomateans eating things. :D Great video.

Really great video. One of the most captivating I have seen of any ciliate. Nice healthy culture you have there.

Thanks, microbial, for this great documentation of that ciliates feeding behavior. Intresting how the (relative to this ciliate) huge nematode jostling against this hunting ciliate did not induce a contraction, no sign of 'altered prowling' by your hunter ciliate. It is only a sample instance of one event..but your predator in it's first ingestion episode did seem to veer and twist 'purposfully' toward that object it ingested , and this prowling ciliate did seem to lunge at the larger ciliate after this first ingestion event...but in the last ingestion event, your hunter-ciliate did not 'seem to lock in and pursue the organism which it eventually ingested...it seemed a random contact with the predators front end which triggered ingestion...no apparent struggle on the part of the contacted/ingested 'object'...no apparent struggle by either the first ingested object...or the last ingested object. Great documented encounter..., I felt like I was there peering into your stands eyepiece! thanks for your live organism microscopy, microbia ! Charlie guevara

Great video!

I've seen some long necked ciliates in some of my cultures, but have never seen them feeding like that. I think the ones I saw were a different species that only looks similar.

I think it's full after the last catch, and the neck retract for digestion :D

wow, this is the first time I am seeing this aspect of microscopic life...
opened up a whole new world for me... spent the afternoon on youtube
learning about the appetities, hunting and evasive techniques of all
these creatures that are new to me. Thanks for the introduction !
