Duplo Illuminata

#1 Post by hkv » Sat May 05, 2018 3:18 pm

Inspired by the photographer Stephen Wilkes (Instagram: @stephenwilkes) “Day to Night” images where both night and day are captured in a single image, I decided to capture microscopic beauty using dual illumination techniques and combine them into a single image. Some images in this serie, which I call “Duplo Illuminata”, are made of up to 100 images stacked, stitched and then combined in photoshop to achieve a blended image combining the two illumination techniques.

Beautiful creations of art!!
The top one - Daphnia - is somewhat surealistic. It really looks like the creature is flying in space and/or time.

Very impressive! Both beautiful images and a neat way to contrast illumination techniques.

Hi Håkan,

great images, thank you for posting!
I like the second image best - is this a blend of bright field and dark field?

Very interesting and artistic combination of the two illumination methods!

No, it is reflected brightfield meaning external light source and a metallurgical objective. The other technique was fluorescent light where the chlorophyll of the algae that grows on the surface of the shell is glowing in red/orange.

@hkv
I did not realize at first they were fluorescence! IMO your combination of brightfield (or DIC, no matter) and fluorescence for the same molecules (the chlorophyll and related molecules) in photos 4 and 5 created not only an artistic piece of work but a fine demonstration of the two iilumination modalities, one vs the other. This is all the more impressive, given the very different absolute intensities of light (the brightness of the FOV) in the two methods!
