Red Algae - Polysiphonia

#1 Post by hkv » Wed May 16, 2018 8:03 pm

I have been growing red algae in a salt water sample jar for some time. Grows in small balls of red threads. This is Polysiphonia at various magnifications and illumination techniques.

Excellent images. It is official - I have neglected darkfield for too long!

Very beautiful photos! the bottom one can be also interpreted as (1) stone/brick statues (2) Cactii plants.
My collected marine green Oluva algae sample contained only trace amounts of red cell strings. Wonder if they were red algae...

More great images! The first image in darkfield, with its many colors, is particularly appealing.

Thank you all for you comments! Yes, I agree. Darkfield is a fantastic technique for beautiful images. I just bought a new oil darkfield condenser that will allow me to go all the way up to 100X at NA 1.4. Before I could only do 0.9.
