As usual - very attractive creation! there seems to be a reach variety of marine diatoms on the western side of the great sea.

Thanks Hobbyst46 - there does seem to be more variety in the sea and some of them also appear to be larger than the ones I have found in fresh water.
Are you near the coast?

I am in Spain, my sea is the Mediterranean.

Nice captures 75, so much detail I have to keep reminding myself they are microscopic organisms and not larger subjects. I look forward to the day I buy the dedicated camera for my scope.

Those are lovely shots! How on earth do you manage to get stacks of living Pleurosigma and friends? The ones I see are far too active.

I'm still trying to find time to collect and observe some diatoms, myself, but I'll get there eventually.
Cheers,

Thanks coominya and KurtM

After a few days the 'smelly' sea water has both me and the diatoms on our knees so to speak ;)
Actually keep the jars in a small cooler - add frozen ice packs to it to keep it cool - lasts longer that way.
Hate throwing away a productive sample.

Also thanks for confirming the diatom ID of the first image: Pleurosigma

Not sure on the second.

Think the last one is probably Triceratium sp.

Yes, my sea is the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, and I am pretty near it.
When I first collected marine algae and stored them in seawater in closed jars, at ambient temperature of around 25, within 4-5 days the stench was unbearable. So, if I will study live samples, I will adopt your idea and keep them in a refrigerator.
So far I have concentrated on cleaning marine diatoms and the diversity is much more than in artificial freshwater ponds. But "my" marine diatoms are neither circular nor triangular nor sigmoidal... :)
