3 Marine Diatoms and a Spicule

#1 Post by 75RR » Sun Aug 05, 2018 7:11 pm

Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 95µm height, 11 image stack in Photoshop
Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 60µm width, 06 image stack in Photoshop
Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 60µm diameter, 12 image stack in Photoshop
Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 85µm arm, 17 image stack in Photoshop

First two diatoms look like centrics, a triangle (triceratium) and curiously a square centric!
Unsure of the third one
Last image is of a Spicule with what looks like a cotton thread.
All from the same slide, imaged this afternoon.

Great images!
Is the Spicule part of a sponge, or is it part of alga?

Good question. Looked it up - looks like sponge.

There is more to spicules than I thought! See neat SEM image:

Yes, great detail. Diatoms make an excellent subject from what I have see posted here, the diversity is endless.
What an amazing planet we live on. Travel and live on mars? I think NOT lol
