These cystine uroliths were found in the urine sediment of a male dog presenting for chronic stranguria (straining to urinate) and pollakiuria (abnormally frequent urination). This image is a focus-stacked micrograph consisting of 7 exposures taken at 1,000x magnification.
Merck Manual quote about cystine uroliths: "Stones composed almost entirely of cystine form in dogs that have a renal tubular amino acid reabsorption defect known as cystinuria... Cystinuria is a lifelong defect of tubular reabsorption and cannot be cured."
