Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks
Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks
After encouragement from 75, I set out this afternoon to see what I could come up by way of stacking oblique images. I was concerned about artifacts from the halos that you get when changing focus point in oblique. I reduced the degree to which pushed the oblique effect and it think it helped some.
These are fossil diatoms from the Puente formation in California. It can be tough to find undamaged diatoms from fossil material, there is one wreck and some chips out of some of these.
AO Series 4 Apostar, 90x Apo, Oblique mask, Canon 70D, Zerene Stacker. Cleaned up the background on all.

Re: Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks
The second image, in particular, is other worldly. Very cool -- thanks for posting them.
Re: Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks
wow, really nice detail - second and last two images are especially good.
lol edit; "last three images" would have been a better way to put it

Re: Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks
Beautifully done, Rod! #1 probably does not need much oblique to stack.

I am not sure I have seen that diatom before, and the oddly shaped bit to the right of it adds some interest too.
Glad you liked it.

Yes the first form, Actinoptychus, has a good bit of relief built in, hard to miss with that one.

Re: Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks
I keep looking at the centric in image three.
The "spots" keep alternating between raised and sunken as I view them. If I look and see them as raised, I can look away and back again and they become sunken.
Anybody else, or should I see a doctor? ;^)

Looking good. Mini oblique + mini µm steps is the way to go.
Make a copy of the image and rotate it 180 degrees. Place it beside its duplicate, like so ... it helps your brain decide :)
If you do so do I. ;) Not your eyes but your brain - it is undecided!I keep looking at the centric in image three.

Reversals like that are a classic optical illusion. Keep it up and you could become a doctor (your PhD, in visual perception).rnabholz wrote:I keep looking at the centric in image three.

My brain thanks you for the clarity you brought to the situation with your illustration..... ;^)75RR wrote:Looking good. Mini oblique + mini µm steps is the way to go.

Any institution that would bestow a doctorate on me would do such damage to its reputation that it would be worthless. ;^)PeteM wrote:Reversals like that are a classic optical illusion.
