Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks

After encouragement from 75, I set out this afternoon to see what I could come up by way of stacking oblique images. I was concerned about artifacts from the halos that you get when changing focus point in oblique. I reduced the degree to which pushed the oblique effect and it think it helped some.

These are fossil diatoms from the Puente formation in California. It can be tough to find undamaged diatoms from fossil material, there is one wreck and some chips out of some of these.

AO Series 4 Apostar, 90x Apo, Oblique mask, Canon 70D, Zerene Stacker. Cleaned up the background on all.

Beautifully done, Rod! #1 probably does not need much oblique to stack.

I am not sure I have seen that diatom before, and the oddly shaped bit to the right of it adds some interest too.

Yes the first form, Actinoptychus, has a good bit of relief built in, hard to miss with that one.

I keep looking at the centric in image three.

The "spots" keep alternating between raised and sunken as I view them. If I look and see them as raised, I can look away and back again and they become sunken.

Anybody else, or should I see a doctor? ;^)

Looking good. Mini oblique + mini µm steps is the way to go.

Make a copy of the image and rotate it 180 degrees. Place it beside its duplicate, like so ... it helps your brain decide :)

Reversals like that are a classic optical illusion. Keep it up and you could become a doctor (your PhD, in visual perception).
