Pond / plancton aquarium: Green Hydra, Ostracods, Snails

#1 Post by MicroBob » Mon Dec 03, 2018 1:05 pm

Hi together,
I made a video looking through the wall of my 30 Liter plancton aquarium.
It is really nice to observe these critters in a halfway natural environment, even without going out into the rain.
They don't adhere very strictly to traffic an behaviour rules though!

Enjoy it!

Very nice. Great view of the Hydra. They are amazing creatures.
Large snail was quite graceful in a ponderous way

How far in can you focus?
Zeiss Standard WL (somewhat fashion challenged) & Wild M8
Olympus E-P2 (Micro Four Thirds Camera)

My aquarium microscope has not yet reached it's final stage of development. I'm using a Manfrotto 244 joint arm, an adjusting slide, a holder I made from 3mm aluminium and a B&L Stereo Zoom 4 head. The free distance is large at about 10cm, but the image quality suffers when I focus deeper. So it's best to stay in the first couple of centimeters of water behind the wall or below the surface. The glass wall also has the advantage to make focussing easier.

I like the setup and the video, especially the Hydra. It is like scuba diving without getting wet...

These hydras look like a heap of green rubbish when disturbed. It's probably no too easy to get them to unfold in a petri dish. In the video an ostracod tries a hydra for nutritional value and regrets it immediately.
