So it is a colony of many diatoms together. Beautiful view. A Blog by Shelly Wu tells she found this diatom on Sea Letuce. I must look for it too.

I would say it was a little square for a nematode. They tend to be longer and thinner. ;)

A quick search on the internet confirms it is also used for nematodes, sponges, viruses etc ... anything rod-like or striped in fact.

This is the OED:

rhabdo-

(ˈræbdəʊ, ræbˈdɒ)

combining form of Gr. ῥάβδος rod, occurring in a few technical terms (chiefly zoological)

It is a single diatom though it is colonial.
