These are a few videos of rock specimens from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. These rocks are metamorphic and nearly 2 billion years old. Unfortunately I was viewing these from a very strange scope they had in the visitors center and can't really ID anything from these videos.
The changes in color are from the rotation of the stage which changes how cross polarized lights travels through the minerals, on a regular scope with a goniometer could be used to identify minerals.
I'm not sure if this technique or a similar one is used in biological practices.

The weird scope in question was a "Wentzscope" like this one.

What an intriguing 'scope! It looks almost like a phototube with perhaps an eyepiece or even an objective inside, used by looking down the open end....
An interesting gadget indeed!

Ah, thanks michael - an ingenious design and as the patent's description suggests, likely to be interesting to children. A great little item for a collector!

It brought back fond memories of the 'Micrarium' at Buxton
... a delightful little museum adjacent to St Ann's well, facing The Crescent
