Planapo 63x/1.4, DIC, 40µm, 7 and 25 image stacks in Photoshop, Marine sample, Alboran Sea.

Possibly Cyclotella sp. (be nice if someone can confirm)

75RR, what a beautiful diatom image !
It is round, but is it centric ? to me it looks a bit bilateral.

Perhaps this ?
Campylodiscus thuretii

(A diatom from Menorca apparently...)

Thanks for the link. This article will help me too ! present-day diatom articles often do not show images, especially if the species is known.
BTW - I imagine, their processing of the diatom for SEM modified the frustule, and made it sort of less round, more heart-like.

Although far from certain, I'm thinking there's enough subtle shape variation in this one to cover a bit of outline discrepancy. Campylodiscus is a notoriously tricky bunch, a gang that lays awake at nights plotting new ways to throw pursuers off the track. I have to give the Eagle Eye Award to Mr Hobbyst46 for going to this genera in the first place, I was heading towards the Surirella bunch myself. But in my defense they are very closely related I suppose.

Very cool find, 75, and splendid images as usual! 8-)
Cheers,

Thanks KurtM,

agree that subtle shape variation and viewing angle are enough to cover the differences between images.
