Here is a comparison I did way back in 2016, no DIC as I did not have it then! Resurrected in 2018I'd be interested to see you do a comparison of same subject of BF, DIC, DF and Phase; or a subset of those.

About modality comparison:
IMO, to reveal the detailed structure of live diatoms, the advantage of phase and DIC over BF, and even over oblique and DF, will be more prominent than for the desmid.
