Foraminifera from Tropic Shale (Lower Cretaceous), Tropic Utah

#1 Post by geo_man » Mon Jul 08, 2019 6:30 pm

My friend brought over a sample that we cleaned and this is one of the forams we found. Top image shows aperture (mouth area) and second image is of opposite side. Stacked images with my SZ7 w/2x AUX lens.

Very cool!

Are these forams considered index fossils for the early cretaceous?

I don't know much about fossils but I do have some samples you might be interested in, I will try to get pictures soon!

Thanks jb89, this foram lived for tens off millions of years, per my paleontologist friend, so not a great index fossil, but still definitive for the early cretaceous and interesting morphology. I look forward to you posting some foram pics!

Thanks Billt. It was interesting to take the somewhat friable shale sample, break it up, boil it in water with a dash of dish soap, dry it and then pick out these tiny 100 million year old fossils!
